Information?
Gum disease is an infection of the gums that often occurs when someone isn’t practicing proper oral hygiene. In its early stages, this condition is easy enough to treat. But, if you allow it to continue attacking your smile, gum disease can lead to gum recession, loose teeth, jawbone destruction, and even tooth loss. There are a lot of gum disease myths floating around, so continue reading as we bust five of them!
Myth #1: Gum Disease Is Rare
Despite what many people think, gum disease is an incredibly common oral health condition. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) roughly 50% of adults ages 30 and older struggle with some form of this infection. That’s why it’s important to look for common symptoms of gum disease, such as:
- Receding gums or teeth appearing longer than before
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
- Red, inflamed, or tender gums
- Pain when chewing
- Sensitive teeth
- Lose teeth
Myth #2: I’ll Lose My Teeth If I Get Gum Disease
As previously mentioned, untreated gum disease can progress into a more serious infection, which may result in tooth loss. Even so, that doesn’t mean people with gum disease are destined to lose their teeth. When caught in the early stages, gum disease can be treated and even reversed. Eating a well-balanced diet, brushing twice and flossing once daily, and visiting your dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings will help you keep your teeth healthy and where they belong.
Myth #3: Bleeding Gums Are Normal
Some people think that bleeding gums when they floss between their pearly whites are normal. As we mentioned above, this may be a sign of a gum infection. If you notice that your gums bleed when doing your oral hygiene routine, schedule a visit with your dentist so they can administer the treatment you need to get the infection under control.
Myth #4: Infected Gums Will Heal on Their Own
If you have a gum infection, it’s crucial to visit your dentist as soon as possible. It won’t go away on its own, so receiving prompt treatment is key to saving your teeth, gums, and jaw from damage. Scaling and root planing is a common treatment for gum disease that removes plaque and tartar as well as smooths the tooth roots so buildup is less likely to happen and the gums can heal faster.
Myth #5: There’s No Way to Prevent Gum Disease
Genetics are a factor in how prone someone is to developing gum disease, but this condition is still largely preventable. There are a few things you can do to lessen your risk of developing a gum infection, including:
- Eat a well-balanced diet of lean meats, fresh produce, fish, and dairy products
- Quit bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol excessively
- Brush your teeth twice per day for a full two minutes
- Attend dental checkups and cleanings biannually
- Rinse with mouthwash every day
- Consume sugar in moderation
- Floss every night
As you can see, there are many gum disease myths out there. With the above information, you should be able to keep your smile healthy and infection free!
