Information?
Have you noticed that your teeth have started to become more and more stained over time? Even though discoloration is a natural part of getting older, the years aren’t the only thing you have to blame. Certain foods and beverages, like wine and berries, are known for causing staining if you consume them often, but why is that? Continue reading to learn more from your dentist about how different substances stain your teeth as well as how different teeth whitening options can make it less apparent.
Why Do Certain Foods Stain Teeth?
The thing that staining foods have in common is that they all contain a substance called “tannin.” Tannins are a group of organic compounds that are responsible for giving foods and beverages both a dark color and bitterness.
The outermost part of the tooth, also known at the protective enamel, defends the inner, more sensitive parts of the tooth from sensitivity and infection. However, the enamel is porous and will eventually absorb different substances, like sugar, bacteria, and tannins. Certain pigmented foods, like wine and cherries, have a substance called chromogen which reacts with tannins causing a more intense color. In the end, you will end up with teeth discoloration.
Which Foods and Beverages Stain Teeth?
Many different dark pigmented foods are likely to cause staining over time. Here are some of the most common:
- Coffee: Many of us enjoy our morning cup of coffee, however it is known to stain your tooth enamel over time. It alters the pH balance in your mouth and makes your teeth more vulnerable to staining.
- Tea: Many different black, green, and herbal teas contain tannins, therefore naturally staining your teeth over time.
- Berries: Even though they are very healthy, they are known to stain your dental enamel. Try consuming them in a smoothie with a straw to limit contact with your teeth.
- Red wine: After a long week of hard work, many like to wind down with a glass of wine. However, wine contains tannins just like tea and coffee as well as acids that affect your oral pH.
- Curry: This dish often contains a high turmeric content. This produces yellow stains over time.
How Can You Whiten Your Teeth?
Teeth whitening can help reverse discoloration that occurs over time. You have several different cosmetic options:
- Porcelain veneers: If you have quite a bit of discoloration, these thin porcelain shells can cover up your imperfections and leave you with a natural appearance.
- Dental bonding: This allows for the dentist to conceal minor flaws on the teeth, like chips or discoloration. This is fast and affordable.
If you’re looking to prevent discoloration, keep in mind that these foods and beverages certainly won’t help. By being mindful about your smile, you will be able to keep it bright and white!
